Oil-rich ground almonds don't just make our products look like cakes—they cleanse the skin and leave it soft and supple!

Where does Lush purchase these almonds?

Lush UK* mainly source ground almonds from Almendrehesa, a Spanish supplier based in Granada, from whom we also purchase organic almond oil. To produce ground almonds, they use a mix of around 10% regeneratively grown organic almonds and 90% conventional almonds. All almonds come from the Andalusia region, with 99% of crops being rain-fed.

Almendrehesa was founded in 2016 by twenty farmers, driven by a desire to improve their land and their lives. Eight years later, there were more than fifty. They are part of a network called AlVelAl that aims to restore degraded ecosystems and land using regenerative farming techniques, among other things.

The 10% of regeneratively grown organic almonds used by Almendrehesa are supplied by farmers who have signed a Commitment to Regenerative Agriculture, establishing the following minimum standards:

• The use of compost as fertiliser and almond tree prunings as mulch.
• Soil vegetation is covered, with careful management to increase water retention.
• Water management practices, including the implementation of swales or ponds.
• Erosion prevention practices, including dikes and dams.
• Diversification of almond tree varieties used.

Lush is also collaborating with Almendrehesa on a project to expand the adoption of regenerative farming practices among a broader network of farmers. This initiative involves establishing pilot trials to demonstrate the effectiveness of these practices to both internal and external stakeholders.
