Cinnamon is used as a flavouring for foods and has also found its way into oral hygiene products and cosmetics. It has a fragrant, spicy, intensely warming and slightly sweet flavour.
Native to India and Sri Lanka, Cinnamomum zeylanicum is an ancient spice that comes from the inner bark of a tropical, evergreen species of the Laurel family. Sometimes referred to as ‘true cinnamon’, it has a delicate, sweet and slightly citrussy aroma that is different to cassia or Chinese cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia), which tends to be stronger and spicier.
One of the rarest and most expensive items in the spice trade, it was favoured by ancient Egyptians for embalming and to preserve food because of its powerful antimicrobial and antiseptic properties. These properties still make it a popular cleansing ingredient in oral hygiene products today, including toothpaste and mouthwash.
Cinnamon bark oil adds a cosy yet sensual smell to products, which is thought to have an aphrodisiac effect. This is likely in part due to the oil’s ability to help stimulate blood circulation and energise tired muscles, and the warming effect it has on the skin when applied topically.
