There are many symptoms and side effects caused by the hormonal changes that menopause brings. These can include the following:
There is no one-size-fits-all experience of menopause or perimenopause; it affects everyone differently. Some people are barely affected, while others suffer greatly from symptoms that alter their quality of life. Whichever category you fall into, if you’re experiencing any symptoms we’d always recommend that you reach out to a medical professional for advice. You can also put the 'pause' in menopause by practising self-care. We reached out to Lush's Menopause Community Group to ask for their go-to products to boost wellbeing, as well as any handy hints and tips for your menopause journey.
Sleep disturbance, poor sleep, and even insomnia can be experienced during perimenopause and menopause. So setting a relaxing bedtime routine can help you to switch off and, hopefully, sleep a little deeper. It’s important to create a bedtime ritual that you can do every night — even on weekends. Sleeping and waking at the same time can also help programme your mind to release the correct hormones at the correct time, strengthening your internal body clock (also known as circadian rhythm).
The benefits of bathing to promote rest and relaxation are widely known. We suggest taking a warm bath with a Deep Sleep bath bomb, full of relaxing lavender and chamomile, or indeed a shower with products from the Sleep Better collection to help you unwind. Twilight body spray can be used as a pillow spray as well as a calming bedtime fragrance. You can also relax by following one of our massage bar tutorials on YouTube, such as Self Massage for Sleep and Relaxation, using Deep Sleep magnesium massage bar. When tested, 81%* of product testers found their NHS sleep score improved after four weeks of using this massage bar. Is it any wonder it’s our bestselling massage bar?

It’s thought that between 70% and 80% of people experience hot flushes and night sweats during menopause. A hot flush is a sudden feeling of warmth in the upper body that’s usually most intense over the face, neck, and chest. Night sweats are hot flushes that happen at night, which may disrupt your sleep.
Refrigerated Breath of Fresh Air toner water is great when a hot flush appears, as patchouli soothes the skin, rosemary clears the mind and rose uplifts the mood. Some recommend a spritz of the invigorating Dirty body spray on the neck, chest, and wrists in the midst of a flush, while others opt for Whoosh shower jelly straight from the freezer for ultimate refreshment. The cooling properties of eucalyptus, peppermint, and spearmint, plus the soothing nature of witch hazel makes After magnesium massage bar a popular choice for application during a hot flush.
Finally, applying Silky Underwear or Sleepy Dust dusting powder before bed can help buy a little more time asleep before the discomfort of night sweats kicks in.
During menopause, a drop in hormones, particularly oestrogen, can lead to some people experiencing effects of fibromyalgia, all-over body pain, fatigue, aching muscles and even osteoporosis. While you’re waiting for that GP appointment, why not try one of the products suggested by the Lush Menopause Community Group for soothing weary bodies after a long day?
Salt Water Soother Epsom salt cube is part of our magnesium range and will help invigorate with magnesium magic, while refreshing peppermint and eucalyptus oils wash away fatigue. You could follow this up with Pink Peppermint foot cream: the soothing and calming benefits of arnica infusion make it a self-care staple.
Massaging with effective products is also an excellent way to soothe the body and ease any areas that are causing concern. Apply to the whole body or specific areas of concern and allow the hydrating butters and essential oils to work their magic. This can be done frequently throughout the day when needed, or — for ultimate impact and indulgence — after a warm bath to help you relax. Why not wind down by following one of our massage bar tutorials on YouTube — such as Self Massage for Achy Joints in Hands, Arms, Legs, and Feet — using our Joints massage bar from the CBD range?
During menopause, hormonal changes include a loss of oestrogen, a hormone that is related to the production of collagen, which is an essential building block of healthy skin. Oestrogen is also related to the production of the natural oils that keep your skin moisturised. A lack of collagen and natural oils can cause skin to feel dry and itchy.
There are lots of options to moisturise the body. Bathing in Ceridwen’s Cauldron bath oil is a luxurious treat, followed by Dream Cream body lotion or Therapy¿ massage bar to hydrate and soothe the skin.
We’re also spoiled for choice when it comes to hydrating face products. Angels On Bare Skin or Ultrabland cleanser, Eau Roma toner water, and Peace or Skin’s Shangri-La moisturiser to name but a few. Using Full of Grace naked facial serum as a night serum or under a face mask such as Catastrophe Cosmetic will help give a boost of hydration to soothe dry skin. Don’t forget the rest of the face! Lip Service lip balm will deliver extra moisture to parched lips, and Enchanted eye cream gently hydrates and leaves the eye area looking luminous. Pop in to your local Lush shop and let us spoil you rotten with a consultation or even a luxurious on-skin demo so you can find the perfect fit.
Noticing there’s a little more hair in the drain than there used to be? While hair loss can be caused by a variety of factors or health issues (temporary or long-term), androgenetic alopecia, also known as Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL), commonly presents in menopause. That’s because, when levels of oestrogen drop, hair follicles that are predisposed to be sensitive to testosterone start to become smaller and produce finer hairs. If someone is using Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) or an oral contraceptive, they can check with a medical professional that it is a hair-friendly variety.
High levels of stress can trigger hair follicles to prematurely stop growing and shed, so we can recommend taking the time for self-care and relaxation. A diet rich in protein, iron and complex carbohydrates is also important — growing healthy hair takes a lot of energy and nutrients and your body will prioritise other functions when your battery is running low!
Although this form of hair loss is genetic — we have many products that can help to refresh the scalp and hair while also adding volume and body. However, it is always important to seek advice from a doctor or trichologist if someone is concerned about hair loss to rule out any other underlying causes.
Minty and moisturising, Roots scalp treatment invigorates the scalp while helping to increase the mechanical strength of your strands. New shampoo bar’s nettle and peppermint infusion is a great option to invigorate the scalp and cleanse the hair, while Wasabi Shan Kui shampoo contains scalp tingling wasabi and menthol crystals, plus salt for body and volume.
Valkyrie conditioner is packed with protein-rich chickpea cream and aquafaba to strengthen the hair fibre, meaning less breakage while you brush, and Super Milk conditioning hair primer detangles, protects and moisturises thanks to hydrating nut milks and olive oil. If you’re looking for a natural hair colour then Henna is a great option, it coats the cuticles to add body, thickness and shine, while also being gentle on the scalp.
Many people find that their libido, or sex drive, changes during menopause due to decreased hormone levels. Most common is a loss of libido, however, some can experience an increase. Alongside hormonal fluctuations, physical symptoms such as vaginal dryness, breast tenderness, and hot flushes may mean you’re less likely to be in the mood. Add to that disrupted sleep and night sweats, and is it any wonder you fancy a good night’s sleep more than you fancy your partner?
Many women and other menopausal people experience a drop in self-confidence while adjusting to the appearance-related changes that the hormone fluctuations of menopause can bring. While this is not a direct link to loss of libido, it certainly doesn’t help.
Take the time to do things that make you feel good. Our Validation Facial Spa treatment is the ultimate confidence-booster: a deeply beneficial, luxurious 60-minute bespoke facial massage that uses word association and our finest skincare to make you radiate confidence.
At home, take a soak in seductive jasmine, rose, and oud; bathing in a Goddess bath bomb makes you feel like one. Why not spritz a scent that inspires power and confidence? Lust perfume is a bold, warm and evocative fragrance to help you face anything.
If you’re feeling it, connect with a partner by following one of our massage tutorials on YouTube, such as How to Give a Neck and Shoulder Massage, while using sensual ylang ylang and jasmine scented Sex Bomb massage bar — a great way to nurture intimacy.
The hormone oestrogen has many positive impacts on the brain, like increasing blood flow and supporting memory. A natural decline in oestrogen during menopause can often impact brain function with many people reporting memory issues and ‘brain fog’ (a term to describe poor concentration, confusion, and slow, fuzzy thinking).
Hormone-related stress can be a vicious cycle, with unpleasant symptoms causing stress, which then comes with its own physical and emotional symptoms. When oestrogen decreases so does ‘happy hormone’ serotonin, and a hormone called cortisol begins to increase. Elevated cortisol levels are known to increase irritability and anxiety, as do symptoms like hot flushes. Although depression isn’t caused by menopause it can often be experienced during this time due to the overall impact.
Self-care is no substitute for seeking support from a medical professional, but taking the time to pamper yourself provides valuable time to switch off and reset. To help you also practise self-care, we have plenty of products containing ingredients thought to help calm the mind and uplift the mood — all recommended by our Menopause Community Group, of course.
Feeling good isn’t all lavender and wind chimes (though that sounds good too). Happy Hippy shower gel is bursting with grapefruit and bergamot: sunny citrus ingredients to blow away the cobwebs and give you a much-needed boost. Alternatively, refresh and invigorate the senses with Clear The Air Lush melt, thanks to herbal eucalyptus and rosemary oils.
4:20PM CBD bath bomb from our CBD range contains 25mg of soothing cannabidiol to help you gently unwind. For the ultimate pick-me-up, Lush’s signature foot and scalp massage, The Spell, is inspired by reflexology: the ancient art of treating the mind and body through the soles of the feet. Finally, if you’re looking for a lift, spritz yourself with the joyful scent of Sun perfume, full of juicy Brazilian orange oil to put the pep in your step.
